Hello all, it’s Dawn here again. For those of you who know me then you know I am the A Clean Cigarette blogger that fumbles across the internet seeking out information that we as A Clean Cigarette brand e-cigarette users need to be aware of. If you don’t know me, I invite you to come get to know me, and I thank you for being here. I hope that I can keep these blogs fun but informative and that you will come back often to stay updated! 6.6 million lives could depend on it.
On the blog here and in our A Clean Cigarette community we have been all about the WHY behind the things that we do. I would like to keep with that today and talk about a WHY that I personally feel pretty strong about.
I have been asked why I separate e-cigs and vapors into two different industries when I am blogging. The answer is because they ARE different.
It’s simple, really one type of product is designed to look and feel like a cigarette. It is not designed to be a new product, instead, it is designed to be an update to an existing product. The burning tobacco cigarette.
On the other hand, the vapor products on the market are a whole new product. Thier only similarity to traditional cigarettes is that some of these devices deliver nicotine. The look, the feel, even the taste and throat hit are different than a traditional burning tobacco cigarette. These products are brand new things that happen to sometimes deliver nicotine.
Instead of throat hit they give cloud, instead of cig-a-like design, they give a handheld device and instead of a familiar tobacco taste, they offer dessert and candy flavors.
Now I am not saying one product is better than the other, but they are different from each other. MoD and Tank model vapors are fine products for people looking for a new device, and flavors like Gummy Bear and Fruit Loop. For smokers like me, who want a cigarette though these are just not the simple product my burning tobacco cigarette was and now my A Clean Cigarette brand e-cigarette is. They are different.
They are different in marketing and demographic too. Most e-cigs, like the ones you see produced by big tobacco companies on gas station shelves and like the high-quality ones that we produce here at A Clean Cigarette are actually rather boring. They are not designed with a trend-setting image in mind. Like I said they don’t really do anything new. There is no new toy novelty to it. What little novelty they held wore off as soon as the public saw them for what they are, an electronic version of the cigarette.
On the other hand when it comes to vapor products NEW is what it’s all about. The cooler the design, the larger the cloud, the more unique they are the higher in demand they are and the more they are talked about. Here is a gallery of a few different types of products and it is pretty easy to see just by looking at these that they are NOT intended to be Cig-a-like.
The images above vary from basic box Mod type vape to sci-fi creation, one thing is for sure on all of them though. They are not designed to mimic the look and feel of traditional tobacco or traditional tobacco rituals.
So they are different and one keeps the rituals of smoking burning tobacco, the other doesn’t but how important is that really?
Well let’s ask the experts from one of my favorite pieces of science on the electronic cigarette and vapor industries:
Safety evaluation and risk assessment of electronic cigarettes as tobacco cigarette substitutes: a systematic review
This systematic review is one of the first of it’s kind ever done for this industry back in 2014. It had a ton of positive things to say about ENDS products as a whole (ENDS = Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems) so take a peek at it for your own information. For today though, we will focus on the parts about smoking rituals and what importance they have for smokers.
1. It starts off with a statement regarding the rituals and their impact on cessation success rates for people trying to quit.: “Complete tobacco cessation is the best outcome for smokers. However, the powerful addictive properties of nicotine and the ritualistic behavior of smoking create a huge hurdle, even for those with a strong desire to quit. “
2. Later they note this about what is necessary to help success rates:“In particular, sensory stimulation [Rose and Levin, 1991] and simulation of smoking behavior and cigarette manipulation [Hajek et al. 1989] are important determinants of a product’s effectiveness in reducing or completely substituting smoking.”
3.The last quote I will bring to you that clearly shows the value of mimicking the rituals behind burning tobacco is a bit lengthy, but worth the read: “ECs are unique in that they provide rituals associated with smoking behavior (e.g. hand-to-mouth movement, visible ‘smoke’ exhaled) and sensory stimulation associated with it [Farsalinos et al. 2013b]. This explains why these products can be effective in reducing consumption of tobacco smoking [Bullen et al. 2013; Caponnetto et al. 2013b; Polosa et al. 2011] and are effective as long-term substitutes of conventional cigarettes [Farsalinos et al. 2013b].”
Okay so rituals are important and the rituals of burning tobacco are way more closely mimicked with a cig-a-like design than with a vape product. Looking just at point two above really demonstrates how important the differences are too. When I think of the ritual of manipulating my traditional cigarettes, I think of holding it in my fingers. I think a particular feel and shape. I don’t think a box mod like the ones pictured above will have the same feel at all. it wouldn’t even be familiar let alone a mimicry of my past behaviors. Yet we can clearly see above that according to this research mimicking these behaviors as closely as possible is an “important determinants of a product’s effectiveness in reducing or completely substituting smoking.”
Now can you see why when I blog, I call the two industries different? Because we are different. We are different but that does not mean there is not plenty of people for both types of products.
Vapes will just continue to attract the demographic that they do and E-cigarettes like A Clean Cigarette brand electronic cigarettes will continue attracting long-term nicotine addicts looking to upgrade their cigarette to the 21st century.
I hope that this blog cleared things up from our point of view and I look forward to the feedback I will receive regarding it. Whether you agree or disagree, please feel free to reach out, let’s chat about this and any electronic cigarette topic you have thoughts or questions on. The fastest and best way to reach me is through our facebook page. we have a blog E-mail too at AccAnswers@gmail.com but unfortunately, because I put it out here in my blog I get about 300 spam e-mails a day, not including the ones that go to my spam folder. Between that and the good emails that are automatically fed to my spam folder, I have missed peoples e-mails in there and then I feel like a jerk. I hate dropping balls, disappointing you or feeling like a jerk. So use the email, I will do my best to find you, or just reach out on FB and I will get back with you in the same day in most cases. Thank you again for stopping in and thank you ahead of time for sharing this information.
